IS CHOLESTEROL HORMONE?

We all have quite a lot of cholesterol in our blood, and it is there for the excellent reason that it is an essential chemical for the efficient running of the human body. Only a small amount of this cholesterol comes directly from the food we eat: most of it is made by our own body. Nevertheless, it is not a good thing to have too much. Unfortunately, some individuals have very high cholesterol levels, and the cause is hereditary; about 25 people in 10,000 carry this trait. This is a worrying condition which requires constant monitoring and medical attention to correct it. For such people the battle against cholesterol is never-ending because they are prone to heart disease. The rest of us are lucky by comparison, but that is little comfort to many people who now fear that they too are at risk unless they can reduce the amount of cholesterol in their blood. If you find your blood cholesterol level is too high you can generally reduce it by following the advice of a trained dietitian, which generally means eating less fat and more fibre, and especially soluble fibre.
Cholesterol is not a life-threatening toxin, but a medium-sized molecule that is really a building block for important parts of the body. In particular it is an essential component of cell membranes. Cholesterol also stabilizes a cell against temperature changes. It is a major part of the membranes of the nervous system, the brain, the spinal cord and the peripheral nerves. In particular it is incorporated into the myelin sheath that insulates the nerves from the surrounding tissue. Cholesterol is also the forerunner of important hormones such as the female sex hormone, oestradiol, and the male sex hormone, testosterone, and of vitamin D, which we need in order to utilize calcium and form bone. Nearly all body tissues are capable of making cholesterol, but the liver and intestines make the most. We require cholesterol to produce the bile we need to digest the fats in our food, and the name itself comes from the Greek words for 'bile solids'.
Essential though cholesterol is, there can be too much of it, and too much causes a build-up of deposits in the arteries, constricts them, and may even block them, with dire consequences.' The causes which are now seen as contributing to higher-than-normal cholesterol levels are: hereditary factors, which are the most important; then high blood pressure; followed by stress, smoking, obesity and dietary cholesterol.

Know Santhigiri- a spiritual and charitable institution with great thoughts

Santhigiri

Santhigiri Ashram is located in PothencodeThiruvananthapuram DistrictKerala.[1] The ashram was founded by Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru[2] and is recognized as a Social and Scientific Research Organization by the Government of India.[3][edit]

Vision of Santhigiri Ashram

Santhigiri Ashram works towards fulfilling Navajyothi Sri Karunakara Guru's vision of a revitalized life involving spiritual, social, economic and cultural elements.[4]
Navajyothi Sree Karunakara Guru (born 1927, died 1999) was from ChandiroorAlleppey districtKerala. His teachings followed the theme of a global spiritual and cultural renaissance in harmony with material progress. He focused on the aspect of the soul that carries karmic merits and impurities that result in success or failure in life.[citation needed]
With the above vision and process, the ashram functions as a training center; people can either stay at or visit the ashram and attend services and assimilate in the teachings of the Guru by doing karma - correct actions.

[edit]Locations

In addition to the main centre in Pothencode, the ashram also has branches in IdukkiErnakulamChandiroorKanyakumariKottayam,MaduraiPalakkadPathanamthitta and Sulthan Bathery. Branch locations are also being built in Bangalore and Delhi.

[edit]Activities

[edit]Annadhanam

One of Sri Karunakara Guru's objectives was to feed the poor and to this effect the ashram offers an Annadhanam or gift of food, at their various centers, to people from the lower economic strata.[2][5]

[edit]Athurasevanam

Athurasevanam or care of the ailing is a supporting function to the Guru's vision. The ashram performs this function through a chain ofAyurvedic research centers,[2][6] hospitals,[7] onsite and offisite health care programs and camps[8] and social research.[3]

[edit]Athmabodhanam

Part of the Guru's vision for the ashram is Athmabodhanam or spiritual awakening.[9] The awakening is at two levels - rational and transcendental; the former focuses on elimination of ignorance while the latter focuses on knowledge of reality.[10]

[edit]Economic development

As part of the vision of a revitalized life, the ashram focuses on economic development, with an emphasis on trade skills and support for women[11] and cottage industry programs.[12]

top mistakes that employers do

TOP 5 MISTAKES EMPLOYERS MAKE IN SUSTAINING TOP TALENT

Bangalore: Executives have a unique opportunity to boost the motivation and productivity of their top talent without spending lots of money, with today's stale job market limiting employees' mobility. But the fact is that when it comes to managing their emerging leaders or high potentials, many companies are missing the mark, reports Roland Smith of The Wall Street Journal.

Here are the five biggest mistakes companies are making with high-potential talent:

Ignoring the view from the pipeline

This is the first big mistake and it fuels the others. Talent managers and executives tend to discuss the leadership pipeline as if it is theirs to define and control. But talented people inside the leadership pipeline bring their perspectives and experiences to the process. High-potential talent can always go somewhere else. Center for Creative Leadership research shows that even though 95 percent of high potentials say they are committed to their organizations, 21 percent are still actively looking for another job. In a down economy, they are weighing trade-offs.

Treating all high potentials the same

If you aren't considering the view from the pipeline, chances are you have a one-size-fits-all approach to dealing with top talent. High potentials expect (and usually get) greater visibility and access to senior managers, special assignments and training, and greater responsibility. But they also want some say in how these perks and assignments play out.

Leaving high-potentials on their own

It's a mistake to give high potentials free rein to direct their careers. While they want to influence their direction, they are also more committed and engaged when they have a clear career path. High potentials want to know what the next steps are in terms of development, experience and movement. Plus, companies need to be sure the talent they have is the talent they need and that it's deployed well.

Not using high-potentials to develop others

While high potentials receive increased opportunities and investment, they are also powerful talent developers in the organization. They have insight and experience needed for developing the next layer of high potentials as well as the larger talent pool.

Being unclear about high-potential status

Using your high potentials well means knowing who they are and ensuring they know it, too. Organizations that do not formally identify their top talent are undermining their performance and run the risk of losing valuable people. CCL research found that formal identification as a high potential is important to 77 percent of managers. Not being formally identified as a high potential keeps the door open for doubt, lessens engagement and weakens commitment. Only 14 percent of formally identified high potentials are seeking other employment. That figure jumps to 33 percent for employees who are informally

CHOLESTEROL AND HOME REMEDIES FOR OBESITY

Cholesterol
A hormone called cholesterol is the main culprit of stomach fat. So, you can reduce your stomach fat by reducing the amount of cholesterol in your body. One way of reducing the amount of this chemical is to lower the stress level. There are many ways through which you can lower your stress level, and one of them does some excellent work in reducing fat in the stomach area.
(4) Home Remedies for Obesity
1. When you wake up in the morning, have a tablespoonful of honey mixed in an equal amount of water.
2. Drinking hot water continuously throughout the day also helps to dissolve the excess fat in the body.
3. Ginger is effective in dissolving fat. Have it twice or thrice a day in the form of tea.
4. Every one day a week, have a totally liquid diet. Fasting entirely can also be done if it is physically tolerable. This helps to flush out the toxins and excess fats accumulated throughout the week.
5. Regular exercise is one of the most important things. It helps to reduce the excess fats in the body and also keep the person fresh and active throughout the day.
AYURVEDIC STRESS MANAGEMENT

Now-a-days many simple and easily curable diseases are becoming into complicated and incurable just because of mis-management and in later stages even after spending lakhs of rupees in superspeciality hospitals one may not get fruitful results. As an alternative therapy then the patients in last stages bow down to the Ayurveda with great hopes, but even in this stage many patients get better improvements and are living normal life because of panchakarma therapy.
Those who are working under stress, are prone to suffer with lack of sleep, restlessness, mental disturbance, and physical diseases like diabetes, hypertension etc. Among the Ayurvedic treatments the Body Massage and Shirodhara are very much useful in such who spend most of the time in stress. These treatments rejuvenate our body, strengthen our body, relax both body and mind and thus lead us to a better life. These treatments can be done in a specific course of days or sittings with a special time period gap.

seasonal preventive treatments ayurveda

Seasonal Preventive Treatment in Ayurveda –Special Karkidaka Chikitsa
According to Ayurveda, the Malayalam month of Karkidaka (Cancer) is time for preventive therapies.
Karkkidaka is known for rains, joblessness and diseases.
Since Kerala (and India) is an agriculture society, the rain also forces people off fields and into their houses.
During this month, the climate is very damp, with lot of rains. People are prone to diseases of various kinds. In other words, human body becomes extremely sensitive to pathogens.
This period has long been identified as the period for preventive treatments and rejuvenation therapies. This is because, during this period human body will also be receptive to Ayurveda medicines.
The major therapies for Karkidaka month ( July 15th to August 15th)
Massages
Oil massages (abhayanga) of various kinds are performed during this season, according to the age of persons. These massages give physical strength of the body. The medicated oil also passes the medicinal content straight into the bloodstream. Massages are part of rejuvenation therapies.
Karkidaka Kanji (the rice porridge)
Karkidaka Kanji is basically rice porridge with medicinally valuable herbs added. Karkikada kanji kit is available for purchase from different Ayurveda centers.
Sukha-chikitsa (preventive therapy)
Sukham means healthy state and chikitsa is therapy or treatment. Sukhachikitsa is given to healthy persons, to prevent diseases from attacking. Massages (abhayanga) and specially prepared kanji (rice porridge) are part of sukhachikitsa.
Rejuvenation therapy
Ayurveda rejuvenation therapy is long process, lasting for many days, from 21 days up to 45 days. During rejuvenation therapy, the body is first cleaned off accumulated toxic materials (excess fat, chemicals, pathogens, etc). The accumulated body waste is called ama or body toxins.
The body is then strengthened with special medicines like Rasayanas and with medicated oil massages (abhayanga).
Rejuvenation therapy can also include full-scale panchakarma treatments. However, according to the age, physical and mental conditions, and other factors, the doctor may decide to omit one or more procedures of panchakarma treatment.
The month of Chingam (Leo) follows Karkidaka. Chingam is time of blooming, gaiety and general healthfulness. However, the month that precedes Chingam (karkidakam) is the month of diseases.
Special Ayurveda packages for preventive healthcare are available in different Ayurveda hospitals and recognized treatment centers in Kerala. Karkidaka kanji kit is also available at many Ayurveda centers across Kerala.

Ramadan Fasting: Health Benefits and Problems
Muslims from across the world stay ordained to the Quran and fast for the whole of Ramadan month. Fasting is a part of pleasing God, in almost all religions. Probably, the health benefits of fasting were known to our forefathers several centuries ago.
Though the primary aim of fasting by Muslims is to conform to religious norms, fasting brings in several health benefits too. While considering health benefits, there are also a few problems to consider and precautions to take while fasting.
Those who suffer from medical conditions like coronary artery disease, kidney stones, etc are exempt from fasting. The negative effects of total fasting include hypokalemia (drastic drop of blood potassium levels), cardiac arrhythmia (abnormal heart beat), etc. Ramadan fasting is not total fasting and believers take nutrients needed for the body, through the systematically planned early morning and evening food.
Lowering of blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure are the first notable physiological changes.
Diabetes patients need to take extra care while fasting. Hypoglycaemia, a condition characterised by abnormal drop of blood sugar levels can cause health problems. Diabetic patients should reduce intake of medicines or insulin injection during fasting. Monitoring of blood sugar levels is also desirable. Conditions like tiredness, sweating, headaches, unconsciousness, etc are the symptoms of abnormally low levels of blood sugar levels.
Hyperglycaemia- this is the reverse of hypoglycaemia, characterised by increase of blood sugar levels. This is mainly due to the medicines you take to sustain blood sugar levels. Increase in blood sugar levels can cause problems to kidney and eyes.
Problems of Acidity and Ulcer – bile can get filled up in stomach, which causes acidity and ulcer.
Healthy individuals have considerable health benefits from Ramadan fasting. It is an effective detoxification therapy. Toxins accumulated in the body break down and pass out of the body.
Fasting is ideal for both overweight and underweight persons. It is commonsense how fasting works to reduce weight. During fasting, deposited fat gets used and burns down and facilitates weight loss.
Fasting also normalizes the digestive system of underweight persons, and equips body to digest and assimilate nutrients from the food they eat.
Fasting can also clear many skin problems. This is because of the elimination of toxic materials from the body and generally cleansing the blood.
Fasting has advantages in getting rid of addictions and unhealthy habits like smoking and taking alcohol.
Ramadan fasting improves the health condition of healthy people. But for people who suffer from any medical condition should monitor their body and physiology more closely.
Pregnant and feeding women are exempted from fasting and they shall not attempt fasting, as it can deprive nutrition to both mother and child.
